Let’s face it, in today’s world of uncertainty and pessimism, it can be hard to focus on the good. February 17th has been set aside as National Random Acts of Kindness Day across the country.

Originally created in 1995 by the National Acts of Kindness Foundation, this day has grown in popularity and is celebrated throughout the world by individuals, groups, and organizations to encourage acts of kindness.

Research has shown that being kind really can make you happy. In one study conducted by the Harvard Business School and the University of British Columbia, half of the participants were asked to remember a time when they spent a small amount of money on themselves, and the other half were asked to remember a time when they spent that same amount on someone else. The happiness of all participants was scaled to measure how it made them feel. The results found that the group that spent money on someone else were happier than the group that spent money on themselves.

The great thing about acts of kindness is that they can be small. You don’t have to make a huge donation or do something elaborate to express an act of kindness. For example, buying someone a cup of coffee, helping a disabled person, or just telling your technicians what a great job their doing is simply enough.

One way you can express an act of kindness is by donating to the Pest Management Foundation. The Pest Management Foundation has been around for over 40 years and has funded research, education, and training to help shape the way pest control work is done today. It also includes a scholarship fund for students studying an accredited entomology program. In addition, NPMA Gives is a program that was created to recognize pest control businesses that make charitable donations and/or donate their time to help better their communities. At PestRoutes, we’re proud to say that we have made a donation this year to the Pest Management Foundation and we encourage you to do the same.

Conclusion

In the end, random acts of kindness should not be reserved just for one day out of the year but should be celebrated every day. Every little bit of kindness helps to make the world a better place. To quote Jane Goodall, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
